Adult Literacy Project – Waubonsee Community College
Change a Life! Volunteer tutors help adults learn to speak, read and/or write English. A tutor works in either a classroom or one-to-one with a student. Working in an English as a Second Language (ESL) or Adult Basic Education (ABE) classroom involves assisting the teacher with small group exercises and helping students who are falling behind. Tutors who work one-to-one with a student tailor the session to meet the needs of the student. Students learning English have a variety of goals, but typically working on their conversation skills is priority. Adult Basic Education (ABE) students generally want to learn to improve their reading. Prospective tutors have a choice in training, a two day (Saturday) classroom training or an online training which is self-paced. Contact Elsie Mills, Volunteer Tutor Coordinator at 630-801-7900, ext. 4221 or emills@waubonsee.edu for more information. The Adult Literacy Volunteer Project at Waubonsee webpage is: www.waubonsee.edu/adultliteracy
Next training: Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 9:00AM-3:00PM and Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 9:00AM-3:00PM at the Aurora Downtown Campus in Room 451
